A structured internship in VLSI, Circuits & Systems, Semiconductor Technologies, Edge AI and emerging hardware
What is SIP 4.0?
The IEEE CAS Bangalore Chapter’s Student Internship Program is a team-based, project-driven internship for students, guided by mentors from industry and academia across Karnataka.
SIP 4.0 is a structured three-month research and design internship in VLSI, Circuits & Systems, Semiconductor Technologies, Edge AI and emerging hardware — running from mentor-defined problem statements through to research outcomes and competition-ready projects.
Every project is expected to move beyond a routine academic exercise: a working design or prototype, measurable results, and an IEEE-format manuscript. The strongest projects carry through to the IEEE CASS Student Design Competition pathway.
Programme execution plan
A clear progression from project formulation to IEEE CASS Bangalore endorsement.
Call for mentors
Faculty, researchers and industry experts propose feasible three-month problem statements.
Call for interns
Students apply and indicate their technical interests and preferred project domains.
Topic selection
Approved mentor problem statements are shared and students choose preferred topics.
Mentor–student mapping
Teams are mapped on preference, skills, project needs and mentor capacity.
Online launch
Orientation covers guidelines, milestones, evaluation, research expectations and deliverables.
Three-month internship
Teams execute their projects with periodic technical reviews and individual performance tracking.
Project showcase
A full day of poster and oral presentations with demonstrations. The top 10 are selected, with awards and certificates.
Final selection
The top 10 present again; the best 5 enter the design-competition pathway, followed by top-3 endorsement in January 2027.
Internship milestones
| Stage | Key activities | Expected deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Problem understanding, literature survey, research gap, objectives, methodology and architecture. | Finalised objectives and a proposed design or architecture. |
| Month 2 | Circuit and system design, simulation, coding, FPGA or hardware implementation, prototype development. | Preliminary implementation with measurable results. |
| Month 3 | Integration, testing, validation, benchmarking, documentation and manuscript preparation. | Final prototype or design, results, and an IEEE-format paper. |
| December 2026 | Full-day poster and oral project showcase. | Top 10 projects, awards and certificates for eligible interns and mentors. |
| By end Dec 2026 | Detailed final presentation and demo by the top 10. | Best 5 projects shortlisted for the Student Design Competition pathway. |
| January 2027 | Completion, refinement and final assessment. | Top 3 completed projects receive IEEE CASS Bangalore Chapter endorsement. |
Research, implementation and validation are expected to progress together, not in sequence.
Evaluation criteria
| Criterion | Weightage |
|---|---|
| Problem understanding and research gap | 10% |
| Innovation and novelty | 15% |
| Technical design and methodology | 20% |
| Implementation, prototype or simulation | 20% |
| Results, validation and benchmarking | 15% |
| Individual student contribution and performance | 10% |
| IEEE paper, presentation and Q&A | 10% |
Team achievement and individual contribution both count towards the final assessment.
Expected research outcomes
Technical outcome
A completed design, simulation, FPGA or hardware implementation, prototype, or experimentally validated proof-of-concept with measurable performance.
IEEE research paper
Each team prepares an IEEE-format manuscript covering the problem, related work, methodology, implementation, results, benchmarking and conclusions.
Individual accountability
Each intern must show identifiable technical contributions — tasks, reviews, design and implementation work, documentation, and a share of the research paper.
“The authors gratefully acknowledge the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) Bangalore Chapter for facilitating and supporting this work through the SIP 4.0 Student Internship Program.”
Selection pathway
The top three fully completed projects receive IEEE CAS Bangalore Chapter endorsement for the Student Design Competition in January 2027.
