Start an SBCAS Chapter
A playbook for students establishing a new IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Student Branch Chapter at their institution — from petition to first event.
Build a technical community at your college
An IEEE CAS Student Branch Chapter gives students a platform to collaborate, learn and grow together in circuits and systems. Starting one connects your campus to a global network and brings world-class technical activities to your institution.
Requirements
At least 6 CAS student members
You need at least 6 IEEE CAS student members to form a chapter. We strongly recommend 15 or more — ideally 5 from each of three consecutive batches — so the chapter lasts.
An existing IEEE Student Branch
An IEEE Student Branch must already exist at your college. Confirm with your institution’s IEEE Student Branch Counselor before you start.
A faculty advisor who is an IEEE CAS member
An active IEEE CAS member on the faculty serves as Student Branch Chapter Advisor and endorses the petition.
The complete process
File the petition
File a petition on the IEEE portal and choose “Student Branch Chapter” as the petition type.
Complete the application
Fill in every required field. When asked for the Society, choose “Circuits and Systems”.
Add the endorsers
a. Give the details of your college’s existing IEEE Student Branch Counselor.
b. Name the Faculty Advisor — an active IEEE CAS member — as Student Branch Chapter Advisor.
Endorsements and approvals
a. The Student Branch Counselor and the CAS Faculty Advisor endorse the petition — request emails go to them automatically once it’s submitted.
b. All 6 student members listed on the petition approve it.
Executive approval
The petition then goes to the IEEE Executive Committee for final review. Once approved, a confirmation email goes to the Student Chapter Chair — your chapter is officially active.
Launch your chapter
Congratulations — your chapter is established. Next:
- Plan the technical events and activities for the academic year
- Set up the office bearers — Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer
- Run your events and keep your student members engaged
- Update vTools with your office bearers and chapter details
