Membership qualifications
Professional members
Open to individuals who by experience give evidence of competence in an IEEE-designated field: Engineering, Computer Sciences and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, and Law and Policy.
Student members
A Student or Graduate Student member must carry at least 50% of a normal full-time academic programme as a registered undergraduate or graduate student in an IEEE-designated field. The total period in the Student and/or Graduate Student grade is limited to eight years.
How to join
Visit the IEEE membership portal
Go to ieee.org/join and click “Join IEEE”. You’ll reach the official application, where you choose your grade — Student, Graduate Student or Professional.
Select your membership grade and societies
Choose the grade that matches your academic or professional status. You can also add IEEE Societies — like the Circuits and Systems Society — at this step.
Complete the application form
Fill in your personal details, educational background and professional information. Students provide proof of enrolment and confirm their field is IEEE-designated.
Pay the fee and gain immediate access
Complete payment for immediate access to all IEEE member benefits — the IEEE Xplore digital library, member discounts, networking, and your local IEEE Section and Chapter.
